'In the Boat'

March 14, 2026 - Navajo Lake
Water Temp: 49°F
Conditions: Windy, sunny
Species caught: Crappie, Northern Pike
Today's crappie bite was as tough as the wind was strong. I am seeing lots of fish on sonar but breezy conditions made presentation a constant adjustment. Sometimes the wind pushes the boat faster than a minnow swims. The pike showed up, and I landed a medium sized jack on a Bellows Gill Swimmer. He inhaled the bait but luckily the line got caught in the corner of his jaw and never touched the teeth. (Unfortunately the back of my finger did touch his teeth in my first attempt to extract my bait.)
Bass are still hiding. That's fishing some days — most days this winter. Water temperatures continue to climb toward that 50-degree mark, and the transition bite is building. If crappie are your target, the next 4 weeks are prime time especially if air temps remain elevated.
